Roll call, shift logs and handoffs in one workspace

Patrol operations already generate the information a shift needs. The problem is that it lives in a CAD terminal, three group texts, a whiteboard and one supervisor's memory.

The shift-change problem

Shift change in a patrol environment happens under time pressure, often with overlapping calls still holding. Roll call covers what the supervisor remembered to write down that morning; anything discovered in the last two hours of a shift is the most likely to be lost. Repeat activity across consecutive shifts goes unnoticed because no single person sees three nights in a row.

What commonly gets lost

  • Watch items and area-specific safety information discovered late in a shift
  • Vehicles and equipment taken out of service without a written record
  • Follow-up requests from earlier shifts that were never assigned to anyone
  • Repeat alarm or nuisance activity at the same location across consecutive nights
  • Staffing adjustments and holdovers that affect the incoming shift's coverage

How Shift Relay supports the workflow

A supervisor opens the shift, assigns personnel to zones, posts or units, reviews the incoming handoff and open tasks, publishes the roll-call briefing, and works the shift log through the tour. Before close, the supervisor reviews unresolved items, publishes the outgoing handoff, and closes the shift as a read-only record.

Example use cases

  • Publishing a roll-call briefing and confirming every assigned officer acknowledged it before the shift goes out
  • Passing a documented vehicle problem to the next shift so a unit is not assigned a car that is out of service
  • Tracking a follow-up request across three shifts without it being re-entered or lost
  • Showing command staff which shifts closed without a prepared handoff

Security considerations

Shift Relay is built with tenant isolation, row-level access control, role-based permissions and an append-only audit trail. It is not marketed as CJIS compliant and is not intended to store criminal history, NCIC returns or evidence. It complements CAD and RMS rather than replacing either.
