Fire and EMS

Crew briefings and apparatus status that carry across tours

Long tours and rotating crews make written continuity more important, not less. What one crew learned about a rig, a hydrant or a frequent address has to reach the next crew intact.

The shift-change problem

Fire and EMS shift changes hand off apparatus, equipment, staffing and open issues at the same moment. A partially resolved apparatus problem, a low supply, or a note about a frequent address is easy to mention and easy to forget, particularly across a 24- or 48-hour rotation where the receiving crew may not return for days.

What commonly gets lost

  • Apparatus and equipment problems reported but not yet fixed
  • Medical supply shortages and expiring stock
  • Out-of-service hydrants, road closures and access problems
  • Training and certification items due before the next tour
  • Frequent-address and crew-safety information

How Shift Relay supports the workflow

Company officers open the tour, assign riding positions, publish the crew briefing, log events and equipment issues as they occur, and publish a handoff before the relieving crew arrives. Asset status changes stay attached to the apparatus record with full history.

Example use cases

  • Recording an apparatus issue once and carrying it forward until it is resolved
  • Confirming every riding position acknowledged the tour briefing
  • Tracking expiring certifications alongside daily operations
  • Producing an end-of-tour summary without retyping the log

Security considerations

Records are isolated per organization and protected by role-based access and row-level policies. Shift Relay is an operational continuity tool and is not a patient care reporting system; do not store protected health information in it.
